Antonio Meloto visits Cebu Institute of Technology - University

Early in the morning of December 10, 2010, I'm already in school. The reason will never be a typical reason and that's to welcome Sir Antonio Meloto for his arrival in the Mactan International Airport. Together with Sir Jason Lim of the College of Nursing and a GK representative here in Cebu, we drove towards the Cebu Institute of Technology - University. In the coaster, I was able to feel Tito Meloto's busy schedule and busy phone line. What amazes me a lot was he just went to Cebu all by himself, as in no bags and extra packs all around his body. As the GK said, "he is the poorest Chairman of the Board".

In CIT, we had a sit down talk with him. He shared his thoughts mainly about loving our own country the Philippines in any way we can and buy more of the Philippine-made products. As he was talking to us student leaders, there's that challenge he wanted to impart within us.

Interestingly, there are students asking about how can we do it? How can we make Philippines better? He simply answered that we can start it with a movement, maybe in telling each other that we have to buy from our Filipino friends and not having the mind of an ALIPIN or slave. There's also that suggestion to be part of Gawad Kalinga volunteers and end poverty by 2024. Unlike MDG, he visions of ending the poverty by 2024.

By noon, he finally met the selected students of the CIT. There he did the same thing and that's he challenged the students to be patriotic. He also challenged the CIT administration to produce patriotic professionals.

It will always be a memorable day with Sir Antonio Meloto, the Gawad Kalinga Founder and a recipient of Ramon Magsaysay Award for his work in inspiring Filipinos to believe with pride that theirs can be a nation without slums.
